Rehabilitation, despite its positive intent, comes with negative connotation and perceptions in people’s mind. It is actually the action of restoring someone to health or normal life through training and therapy after imprisonment, addiction, or illness.
For alcoholics, drug addicts and their families, rehabilitation offers the hope of redemption and curing. Making the decision to go into a rehabilitation center for drug or alcohol addiction is a momentous one and for many people, making that choice is a really difficult part of the recovery. This is also because the perception of this process is not very great. Besides, once a person makes that decision, another hurdle to overcome is the first week of rehab. It’s been said that every journey starts with the first step, and the early days of recovery are probably the toughest.
In most cases, the first thing a person goes through is the process of detoxification, that is, getting drugs out of the human system. The detoxifying process can be really tough because one is made to stop taking the drugs completely. In some extreme cases, addicts are given medicines when they are being detoxified, in order to ease the pain. A person can fall sick and experience vomiting, fever, sweating and difficulty sleeping during the process.
The rehabilitation centers provide effective treatment but they usually are nerve-wracking. Sometimes people end up losing their identity while they’re in the rehab. They experience loneliness and go into the state of denial. The living conditions in the rehabs can be terrifying and challenging too. A lot of addiction treatment in America is based on the idea that you have to “break” addicts, humiliate them and confront them until they confess their worst sins. There are a lot of group activities that take place in a rehab where the addicts are required to talk about their personal experiences. People find it difficult to disclose personal information in front of so many people and then they feel embarrassed. The problem is the lack of an individualized approach and not understanding that everyone doesn’t belong in a group.
So, is Rehabilitation the only answer to Drug Addiction?
The answer to this is a big NO!
There is another way more effective and useful approach that can be used to treat drugs and alcohol addicts- The Holistic Approach.
